Under Construction Or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Make GIF Animation

Here is a tip for making an animation file from the images you have taken by camcorder or digital camera.

And the internet is littered with moving pictures. Right - those ones that are not quite movies but still move and can be saved like a picture file. I bet you have struggled at least once trying to upload a video you recorded with the digital camera because the file was too big? You may have some photos that you think will be very funny if you connect them based on time series? Great! Here is how to make multiple photos as if they are moving.

Ingredients? Just a few pictures and Photoshop. That’s it. Oh, the details can vary depending on the Photoshop version so please bear with me. You can add onion, broccoli or egg depending on your taste :)

More photos will give a more natural movement, but I will just use three photos for the sake of convenience.

As a note of precaution, the whole thing will not make that much sense if the size is too big. Therefore, I recommend using small pictures with low resolution.

I’m going to try 200X200 size.
First, prepare an empty window…

Drag the picture you are going to use to the empty window. Layer them in the sequence you are going to use. Layer 1 will be the start of the animation.uc-02

If you’ve finished doing that, click on window->animation.
uc-03

Then, an animation window will appear on the bottom. But don’t panic if this isn’t what you get!uc-04

If this is what you see – timeline mode,

Press this button at the lower right hand side.

Now, let’s click on the button on the right hand side of the animation window. The following menu will appear. Click on ‘Make Frame From Layer’.uc-07

You will see a total of four pictures laid out in sequence in the animation window. Drag the white background and dump it in the trash can as you don’t need it.uc-08

Now, we have the necessary frames ready. Next step is to set the time for the animation.
It’s very simple. If you click the area that reads 0 sec, you can set the time. Here, I am going to click on other and type in the time I want.uc-09

I set 1.5 seconds for the first and the second frame, and 3 seconds for the third.uc-10

The bottom of the first frame reads ‘Once’. Click on it and select ‘Forever’, because we want to set infinite loop for .gif animation:)uc-11

Now, let’s press the play button.

You can immediately check the moving pictures.

Do you like the length and movement? Then, it’s time to save!

Click on File->Save for Web & Devices…
Then, the following window will appear. A few things you need to do in the red square box.

Check if the file is in GIF format and whether the looping option is Forever. Press OK and type in file name.uc-14

You are all set now! How do you like it? Make sure that the file isn’t too big.
Why don’t you try it yourself with the pictures you have and make funny GIF animation?
