Review: Samsung SMX-F34 flash memory camcorder

Short Version: Samsung has put out another well-priced, nicely-featured camcorder in the SMX-F34. If you’re looking for a little more than a simple handheld flash memory camcorder but don’t want to pay top dollar for a high-definition video camera, this model deserves a closer look thanks to marathon battery life, good image quality, 16GB of built-in storage, and a 34x optical zoom all at under $300.

Overview and Features

The Samsung SMX-F34 features the following (full specs here):

• 1/6-inch CCD image sensor
  
• 30mm lens with 34x optical zoom
  
• 2.7-inch swivel LCD
  
• 16GB of built-in storage, plus support for SD(HC) and MMC+ memory cards
  
• H.264 video codec (MainConcept AVC/AAC — .MP4 files) at up to 720×480 resolution (see sample file below)
  
• Up to 3 hours of battery life
  
• MSRP of $299.99, but it’s available for around $250 just about everywhere

If you’ve seen my review of the SC-MX20, the SMX-F34 is similar except that it’s got built-in memory, longer battery life, and has a few new features like time-lapse recording and the ability to shoot still images.

Video Quality

Video is shot using the MainConcept AVC/AAC H.264 codec, which produces .mp4 files. The files are easy to work with using most popular video editing software. I personally use Sony Vegas, which handles the files just fine. I’ve had trouble with files from similarly-equipped JVC and Panasonic camcorders, though. The last thing I want to do before editing video is to have to convert it to a usable format first. The files from Samsung camcorders have been usable straight off of the camera — no fuss, no muss.

Here’s an unedited sample file that shows off the 34x zoom and that you can use to see if this camera will work with your video editing software. The file was shot about two hours before dusk, full zoom, with image stabilization turned off.

Files can be read directly off SD or MMC cards or transferred via USB. Transfer time for a 500-megabyte file takes about three minutes.

Battery Life

Samsung pegs the battery life at three hours. I was able to shoot video continuously for two and a half hours, so that three-hour claim likely factors in multiple shots with breaks in between. Whatever the case, I never travelled with the power cord as the battery life was always long enough that I didn’t worry much about it at all.

Additional Features

Aside from just recording video, the SMX-F34 features still image capture, face detection, time-lapse recording, various scene modes, YouTube uploading, image stabilization, windscreen, and more. The camera’s handle swivels 180 degrees, which makes it easy to hold at most angles.

Recommendation:

I think Samsung’s line of flash memory camcorders still represent the best value for the money thanks to the long bat

tery life and good codec support. If you don’t need or want an HD camcorder and you like the idea of having 16GB of on-board memory in case you forget an SD card, you want to take still photos, and you like the time lapse feature, then the $249 street price of the SMX-F34 is pretty tough to beat.

Otherwise, if you can find the SC-MX20 for around $200, that’s a great deal too. You just lose the still images, the time lapse, and you’ll need to supply a memory card.

The SMX-F34

Six Samsung Digital Camcorders Unveiled: 64GB Internal SSD Makes Debut

This year's CES is seeing the usual high volume of digital imaging announcements. Samsung's lineup for the first half of 2009 includes a hearty six new digital camcorders. An H-series lineup (HMX-100, *104, *105, and *106 - shown below) due out in the first four months of 2009, the SMX-F34 which should be seeing store shelves this spring, and finally the HMX-R10 which is expected this summer.



The HMX-100 is the baseline "H-series" model. It is the only model to not offer an integrated SSD, using only SD/SDHC cards instead. The other three models offer progressively larger SSDs in addition to SD/SDHC support. The H104 carries a 16GB SSD, the H105 a 32GB SSD, and the H106 a massive 64GB SSD, which is an industry first as of the company's announcement, though it's only a matter of time before we see 64GB SSDs in other models from any number of different manufacturers of course.


The H-series camcorders all feature a 1.4.5” 2.2M pixel CMOS, !-- @page { margin: 0.79in } P { margin-bottom: 0.08in } -->Schneider Kreuznach Varioplan HD lens, 2.7-inch touch panel LCD, Optical Image Stabilization, Full HD (1920x1080/60i) 16:9 resolution (as well as 1280x720/60P and 720x480/60P), H.264 compression, HD time lapse recording, HDMI/component/composite output, a strobe flash, and a remote control. All models but the H106 should be out in March. If you want the top of the line with 64GB SSD it will be available in April.




While the HMX-R10 will be a bit of a wait, Samsung hopes to capture the interest of hobbyists with the all-in-one capabilities of the camera. Not only does the ergonomic unit film in Full HD, it also has the ability to shoot clear 9 Megapixel still images. The camcorder features a 1/2.33” 9 Mega-Pixel CMO, 5x Optical zoom, 2.7-inch LCD Touch Screen, support for SD/SDHC memory, and HDMI/component/composite outputs.


Finally, the SMX-F34 is specifically designed for YouTube filmographers. With the SC-MX20 as an example to live up to, the F34 offers tons of great features such as a 3 hour battery life, Advanced Image Stabilization, 720x480 resolution filming, 34x Optical Zoom, 16GB of internal flash memory and SD/SDHC memory support, and the ability to shoot 800x600 stills. Spring should be a good time for amateur filmmakers to grab a new camera that is perfectly tuned for web video content creation.

The SMX-F34 includes a memory card slot for SD/SDHC and also offers 16GB of internal flash memory. It also has a 680K pixel CCD sensor delivers a resolution of 720x480 It will be available in four colors, including black, red, silver, and blue, all with silver trim.

Samsung SMX-F34 YouTube-friendly camcorder announced at CES 2009

In addition to the four H-series camcorders announced at CES, the SMX-F34 was also given a look-in. Dubbed as the ‘company’s next generation YouTube compatible compact digital camcorder’, it has a 34x optical zoom and 42x Intelli-Zoom.


16GB of internal storage, otherwise the memory card slot will take SD/SDHC cards. The resolution is alright at 720 x 480 – not the greatest, but we imagine the price will reflect that. Up to eight hours of standard definition when video is saved on the flash memory.


The main attraction of the SMX-F34 is the compatibility with YouTube, specifically the Web & Mobile shooting mode which shoots in the exact resolution best suited to YouTube.


Photos can be taken at a 800 x 600 resolution, and that 42x Intelli-Zoom means you can get further than the 34x optical zoom ‘without sacrificing image quality’, according to Samsung. The LCD screen measures 2.7-inches, and it’s available in black, red, silver and blue.

Samsung continues its line of soda-can-shaped, standard-def camcorders with the SMX-F34. It's based around the company's 2008 flash-based model--the SC-MX20--but adds the ability to capture 800x600-resolution photos to its 16GB of internal memory or SD/SDHC cards.

The F34 records video in H.264 format up to a resolution of 720x480 and out front is a 34x zoom lens. If you like to share your videos online, the F34 is designed to do so with minimal effort on your part.

Coming in spring 2009, the SMX-F34 will be available in four colors, including Midnight Black, Sunset Red, Galaxy Silver, and Deep Ocean Blue and features Samsung's swivel hand-grip for comfortably shooting at low angles (and something I've always liked on its camcorders). No pricing was announced.
