DigitalTrends: Samsung HMX-H106 Review
Flash memory marches on! Samsung recently introduced a trio of high-def camcorders using advanced solid state drives (SSDs) rather than hard drives—or ancient media like tapes and shiny three-inch disks. SSDs read and write faster than HDDs, are lighter, use less power and have no moving parts making them just right for capturing video on the fly. Samsung sent us one with a 64GB drive—the HMX-H106—but the -H105 and -H104 are available with 32GB and 16GB storage, respectively at lower prices. The new AVCHD camcorders are fairly tricked out and it would be good to see if Samsung should be considered a key player in the HD Camcorder Game.

Positive Review from Pocket-Lint: Samsung WB550 Digital Camera
Full Review
10 July 2009 - Getting a broad focal range from a non-interchangeable lens camera needn’t necessitate purchase of a bridge model that won’t fit in your pocket. Witness Samsung cramming a 10x optical zoom (24-240mm equivalent) into its latest WB550 compact, the "W" indicating a wide-angle lens at 24mm and the "B" that aforementioned big zoom. At a width of 36.5mm though, the 12.2 effective megapixel camera nevertheless feels chunky and reassuringly weighty gripped in the palm at 225g, bucking the trend for svelte fashion-conscious compacts.
Plastic of build with chrome detailing, around the back is a large 3-inch, 230k dot LCD screen in the absence of any optical viewfinder, with a nicely firm dial on the top plate providing a choice of eight shooting modes – including one for high definition 1280 x 720 pixel movie clips, with, unusually for a compact, an HDMI port built into the camera’s side. Also handily large are the shutter release button encircled by a rocker switch for operating the zoom. The WB550 offers a broader range of light sensitivity settings than most point and shoots, starting out at ISO 80 and topping out at ISO 3200. While that sounds impressive, resolution drops to 3-megapixels at the higher setting to limit noise. And it appears to work, shots taken at ISO 3200 comparable to the results from rivals at ISO 1600. With little discernable shutter delay, it takes around 2 seconds for a full resolution JPEG to be written to memory – here in the form of either removable SD or SDHC card, or paltry 21MB internal capacity.
Found via the shooting mode dial set into the right hand edge of the top plate (mirrored by a "virtual" version onscreen) is Smart Auto, Samsung’s interpretation of the intelligent auto point-and-shoot functionality offered by Panasonic’s Lumix and Canon’s IXUS ranges.
Select this and the camera will in theory recognise the intended subject and switch its internal settings accordingly, with 11 pre-optimised scenes to choose from. For example point the WB550 at a close object and it’ll jump to macro mode (focusing as near as 5cm), direct it at one further away and landscape mode will be chosen. Also on-board for beginners are the now ubiquitous face detection, blink detection, smile mode – capturing an image when a grin is detected – plus Samsung's own beauty shot option, automatically retouching out spots and freckles. For photo enthusiasts, there’s the ability to select program or manual settings – with the chance to change focus area, metering, single or high speed capture, ISO and white balance therein. Manual adds the ability to tweak shutter speed and aperture on screen via a "command lever" set into the top right-hand corner of the camera back. Being a narrow and uncomfortable lever, with seemingly enough surrounding space for it to have been made larger, it’s one of the few black marks against an otherwise pleasant to use, intuitive device.

Design
What is the most important point of compact digital cameras? It’s the design rather than function or resolution. Many people want slim body with great design. Samsung digital cameras have focused a lot on the design, and got a good evaluation from many users around the world. The WB1000 is also with the good design of 97x61x21mm of size and 160g of weight.
In design, from the WB500 to WB1000, they have similar design. This is called a family look, and selected from a large number of makers in a lot of field from car to camera. Like the phrase “We can see the company by the design”, the firm and strong image of the WB series can be engraved on lots of users.
There’s a part noticeable, and it’s a mini dashboard and smart dial. The mini dashboard was firstly shown from the NV9, and because of the good evaluation, it’s installed again on the WB1000. The smart dial allows users to set menu, iris, and shutter speed more quickly. However, the plastic tripod hole is a little unexpected.
World’s first 3 inch AMOLED hVGA
As a high end digital camera, it seems focused on the display much. For the first time as a digital camera, it has adopted the AMOLED and solved the weak points of the TFT-LCD such as afterimages and viewing angle. The inappropriate color on the earlier model looks arranged. And the high resolution for 3 inch size shows the smooth screen.

Review from PC World: Samsung R10 Digital Camcorder
In a unique twist on design and usability, Samsung has crafted an HD camcorder that is reasonably priced and effective at what it's meant to do, albeit with some sacrifices. That's saying something in an economy where luxury gadgets like camcorders might fall by the wayside for those looking to be a bit thriftier. At $599 CDN MSRP, the HMX-R10 is in the middle between what a point-and-shoot digital camera and high-end camcorder cost, which is to say that it's a pretty good price for what you get.

WB1000 The second story
WB1000 The second story
Recently, I see people with DSLR a lot. It’s because of the price which becomes cheaper than before, and also people want the better quality picture.
Compact digital camera so called a toy camera…The WB1000 is the high level compact digital camera called High-end digital camera, and the high means not only the price, but also the functions the camera has.
Not as good as DSLR, but the quality is enough to appeal people used to DSLR.
The second posting about the WB1000. (Exactly third)
I don’t like much, but I need to introduce the package of the WB1000, or you will be disappointed.
The package is not bad. Compared to Apple or Sony, it’s so simple. It could be better if there was a pouch.
It might mean using it with your own style like the iPod (I really don’t want this way.), but a bundle case should have been provided for people like me who satisfied with the included one. I hope there will be a basic pouch, even if it’s so simple. (Will be?)
The unique thing in the items is that the power cable can also be used as a data cable. In other words, it can be charged through the USB by connecting to a PC. (At home, of course it transfers data with charging.) For those who don’t like complicated cable or travel, this would be very good. (However, I’m telling again. For portability, the case should have been included as a high-end product.) Anyway, this is it.
Just imagine the power adaptor. (Unkind Mr. Davin.)
The battery 3.8V 1,130mAh could take 350 pictures (Largest size) and 3 min video. I also reviewed and deleted pictures, so I can’t say it spend a battery very much. (But not enough, also.) Fully charged battery would be enough to take shots for one day..I’m not sure.
As a maniac, it’s not enough for a main, but enough for a sub.
With the windows XP SP3, it was recognized as soon as connecting it. The CD could be used for emergency.
At first, the appearance appeals, and then the second appealing point is the 3 inch LCD.
As the Samsung famous for LCD, the LCD is not the LCD, but hVGA+AMOLED. In other words, it’s not LCD, but LED. As you see from the picture, different from other LCD, it shows great viewing angle, brightness, and clean images without brightness change depending on the light. This is a very important part for a compact digital camera depending 100% on the monitor without a view finder.
The next special thing is the mini dashboard on the top.
It seems Samsung has prepared much for this dashboard on the top. The classical design appealed to many people. However, this part could be good or bad depending on people. There are people like digital rather than analog emotion. Anyway, it’s not innovative, but stimulates the old feeling, I guess. But, there’s a little delay for the initial movement.
Video of the initial acting of the WB1000
The booting is so fast. The moving needles in the dashboard are cute, aren’t they?
The shot mode dial consists of 10 modes. In clockwise, auto is automatic, S inside the camera is a smart auto to automatically set proper options, camera is a video, SCN is scene, Dual is Dual IS, user is user option, M is manual mode which users can adjust iris value and shutter speed, S is shutter priority, A is iris priority, and P is program mode. The SCN mode consists of 13 scenes, and it helps take appropriate pictures according to the situations without any settings.
The below picture is the initial screen of the SCN mode. When the shot mode dial is “SCN”, it always shows up every time turning it on. (It could be bothering, or convenient.) When the camera is on, this is shown up by pushing the Menu button.

The review of Samsung digital imaging WB1000
A hero dreaming to be DSLR
Prologue
The Samsung digital imaging divided from Samsung techwin and doing strategic marketing has released 13 premium digital cameras in the market on the first half of 2009. I expect the company as the only camera optical company in Korea to be a great company as much as other makers producing DSLR, and I hope this will be loved by customers all over the world as a Made In Korea.
The WB1000 is the highest level of product among the lineup of Samsung. The WB1000 has adopts the Schneider lens which is one of the world’s top 3 lens, 12M pixels image sensor, 24mm wide angle, full manual function allowing free shots, and AMOLED clearing out the weakness of LCD. Besides, with the smart dial and analog dashboard on the top, it gives classical feeling. On top of that, the WB1000 has a lot of functions, and let’s find out them through this review.
Package
The WB1000 adopts the white box. This box design gives a neat image to users, so users will have a good feeling about the camera. Of course, this is not only for Samsung product, but also other various package designs, I guess. Let’s take a look at the package with unboxing and see the WB1000 more.
It’s the box design. You can see the text printed in English, and on the black ground, it tells the main specification with a orange color on the left and right side. As a compact camera, the box is also compact.
Opening the box, you can see booklet like a user manual, and then you can see the WB1000 on the left, and accessories on the right.
They are items in the box. There are camera, AV cable, battery, adaptor, charge cable, hand strap, program CD, product manual, and warranty. I couldn’t see something special in the package, but I could see the thought of Samsung imaging for world wide users by looking at the text in English.

Design
This is the front of the WB1000. Internal flash is on the right top, remote control sensor is on the left top, and on the left there’s a rubber hand grip to provide better grip. And the Schneider 24mm ultra wide lens is hidden.
From the right top, shot mode dial is located. It’s like a manual shot such as a DSLR, and with the various shot modes, you can take a shot in good situations. The shutter buttons is running smoothly, but the power button is not very good to control. And you can see the analog type dashboard showing the completion of design. On the left, there’s a internal microphone and speaker.
On the bottom, there’s a memory/battery port. On the center, USB/AV port is located. Because there’s also a tripod socket, you can enjoy group pictures with your family using the tripod during picnic.

<<Specialty of the ES55 – Scene mode >>
The ES55 which is small, light, and has various functions has some special functions for user convenience. The special function is the various scene modes which you can enjoy without special knowledge about cameras. Let’s take a look at the various functions of the ES55.
Way to set the Scene mode for different situations
Beauty shot: Used to compensate skins and make them handsome.
Before After
The picture above is the comparison of auto mode and beauty shot. The original is not that bad, but applying the beauty shot, the whole picture becomes brighter and cleaner. I think the beauty fits well.
Portrait: Used to take a portrait.
Before After
The portrait mode is not much different from the auto mode, but looking at closely, it seems that the skin tone is brighter with this mode.
Kid: Used to take a moving object and children
Before After
My daughter ‘Si-Hyeon’ 7 months old keeps moving around lately for creeping on stomach. The former picture which the kid mode is not applied to was shaken, but the picture after the mode took the moment very well and the skin is so beautiful. This function is quite interesting.
Scenery: Used to take a mountain and sea
Cropped and resized
It’s was a very good day. It expressed the color of the sea and the green color of plain.
Macro: Used to take a macro shot
Cropped
It was a little shaken, but I think it expressed the color of flower well. On the macro mode, the AF changes to the macro mode, and the macro shot is possible.
Character: Used to take a text and paper without scanning
On the character mode, the AF changes to focus mode, and is set to take a text closely.
Sunset: Used to take sunset.
Cropped and resized
The red sun is beautiful. Due to the big difference in exposure, the tent in front is almost like a silhouette, but it makes the atmosphere better. For this mode, iris and shutter speed are adjusted appropriately.
Backlight: Used to take a shot to prevent dark faces when you are against the light
Before After
Resized and Cropped
After setting the center photometery, and getting closer to the lantern light, faces become black like the backlight. Setting the backlight mode, faces are alive like picture at the right side.
Beach and Snow: Used to take beach and snow
Before After
Beach and snow reflect sunlight, so pictures are so bright that the exposure is automatically decreased. It’s normally 1~2 stop, so pictures become a little dark. Applying the beach and snow mode, the exposure dropped almost becomes normal.
<< Special color feel of the ES55 – White Balance >>
The ES55 supports 7 types of white balance setting functions. When it comes to the white balance function, according to the condition, it’s a little different, and not good enough for high contrast and high exposure difference, but considering that it’s a compact digital camera, especially for those 6 situations, it shows satisfactory functions.
AWB
Camera automatically sets the optimized white balance
Daylight
Used on a sunny day outside
Cloudy
Used on a cloudy, or rainy day
Fluorescent L
Used under white fluorescent light
Fluorescent H
Used under daylight fluorescent light or daylight fluorescent light type 3 wave lights
Tungsten
Used under halogen lamp or light bulb
User setting
Used when users set it using a grey card or white balance paper
<<ISO and Noise of the ES55>>
The ES55 supports 6 ISO such as 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, and Auto. Desiring high ISO with less noise is to want too much, but comparing to the Lumix LX-1 by P company, this is born with the noise reduction. Actually, up to ISO 400, it’s good for normal pictures, and from 800, noise drastically increases, but not that bad for web.
Please look at the pictures taken with different ISO under the same shot condition.
Please look at the pictures taken with different ISO under the same shot condition.
It’s good to 200.
Looking at the resized picture, 400 is not that bad.
From 800, the intensity of light gets lower, and the dark part increases with more noise.
We can see the big rough noise on 1600. Changing to black and white, it’s not so bad.
<< Exposure compensation function for dark or bright situations>>
What’s the way to compensate exposure of a camera? Trusting the exposure gauge of a camera is a kind of mistake to have too much trust on a small device. The reflex type exposure gauge is just truing to set the exposure to one standard. It’s the grey color having 18% of reflecting rate. If the object has lower reflecting rate, it makes it brighter, while if it has higher rate, it tends to make it dark. That’s why we sometimes get a photo too dark or too brighter.
Anyway, under this circumstance of high exposure difference, appropriate exposure compensation would be great, and even if you don’t know anything about exposure, you can compensate it as brighter or darker by seeing the LCD.
When taking shots, you can compensate the exposure through the Fn button on the back any time.
The exposure compensation is possible to +-2, and the above picture is +-1 set. Because the object is king of bright, when it’s normal, it’s a little dark, but through the +1 of exposure compensation, it’s like brighter and more splendid. On the other hand, -1 is too dark, isn’t it? Using it appropriately, it will reduce the time and try of retouching.
<< Style selection function – Taking by style>>
The style selection function is to make a picture which various effects are applied to without edit. I need to see more to find out how useful it is, and here, let’s see the different feeling of each style.
These are the explanation of 10 styles.
Normal : Style is not applied
Soft : Style of soft feeling
Vivid : Style of vivid feeling
Forest : Style of natural and clean feeling
Retro : Style of brown feeling
Cool : Style of cool feeling
Calm : Style of calm feeling
Negative : Image reversion
Custom RGB : Users adjust the RGB and find the color feel
Classic : Style of old pictures, and it’s kind of black and white mode.
<< Photometry selection – Using various photometry>>
By using the photometry appropriately, we can make a pretty picture. The Samsung ES55 supports 3 types of photometry modes. Spot is included!! I haven’t used a compact digital camera much recently. The advanced functions are amazing.
1 2 3
1. Multi photometry
As it said, this photometry is to measure light by dividing screen. It’s used mainly when the exposure situation is complicated. It decides the exposure by calculating the brightness based on the brightness information of each part with the central base.
2. Spot Photometry
It gets the exposure from the spot of the AF region, and is good for the situations which have the striking difference between light and darkness or need certain brightness. At that time, the photometry with the point reflecting appropriate exposure will give you the better result.
3. Center Spot
This ignores the surrounds, measures wider central spot than the spot photometry and calculates the average. This is what I use frequently.
<<Other functions>>
On top of that, it has a lot of functions such as Face recognition, Picture edit, face color compensation, Image stabilization, and so on. There will be another change to introduce them, right? I will do that later.

<<Epilogue>>
Looking at recent cameras, the technology in the camera is getting much better. The better and advanced functions might be stressful to users, because they need to know what they are. Annoying, bothering…
At this time, how intuitive and simple the menu or function can be an important matter to select it. This camera is good at simplifying the menu, and the simplicity of functions is satisfactory, I think. However, the simplicity sometimes triggers the complexity. We need to push a button a lot of times, and get through some levels of menu. I think the developers of the UI have considered extremetly.
Expecting the better UI, I’m going to wrap up the review of the Samsung ES55 which has a reasonable price and great functions.
