Earlier this year, Samsung blew us away with the surprisingly strong performance of their high definition SC-HMX20. Over the years, we had grown accustomed to mediocre video from the Samsung line and the HMX20 gave us not just reason to pause, but to recommend a Samsung camcorder. Unfortunately, the surprising improvements we saw in the HMX20 didn't trickle down to the latest standard definition camcorder: the Samsung SC-MX20 (MSRP $229.00).The MX20 still sports the same 1/6-inch CCD sensor and 34x optical zoom lens as its predecessor, the Samsung SC-MX10. With poorly colored video in bright light and dark—and plenty of noise in any conditions—the MX20 can't keep up with the competition. What the MX20 does do well is provide a smooth experience for beginners and experienced videographers alike. The menus are streamlined, the manual controls are intuitive, and the swivel grip makes just holding the camcorder fun and easy.If you're looking for the best performance from a simple, standard definition camcorder, there are other places you can turn. If you're more interested in a seamless video experience from store shelf to YouTube, we have plenty of good news ahead...


The Front (6.0)The Samsung SC-MX20 has virtually the same physical design as its predecessor, the SC-MX10. As with all the recent Samsung camcorders, the front is entirely consumed by the lens—more so than with most camcorders. This time around, Samsung borrowed from the design of their own high definition line, placing the Schneider-Kreuznach lens in a more distinctive cylindrical housing, rather than blending it in with the body of the camcorder, as they did on the SC-MX10. The result is a classier-looking camcorder.


The SC-MX20's 34x optical lens has an aperture of f/1.6 - f/4.3 and a focal length of 2.3 - 78.2mm. This is all unchanged from last year's SC-MX10. Also unchanged from last year's model is the 30.5mm filter, a standard size for adding accessories like a telephoto or fisheye lens. On either side of the lens, you'll still find the built-in stereo microphone. This seems like a sensible place for the microphone, compared to the popular top-mounted microphones that are easily muffled by wandering pinkies.
Really, the only noteworthy new feature to this generation is the built-in lens cover that can be manually opened and closed. We prefer this to the separate lens cover of the MX10 or the automatic lens cover of the SC-HMX20. Lens caps can be lost and the delicate inner mechanics of an automatic enclosure can fail. The built-in manual lens cover is a positive new feature.

Reviewed by Crunch Gear: Here’s that Samsung YouTube camcorder

In addition to having TVs as far as they eye can see, Samsung has that YouTube camcorder, the SC-MX20, on display at IFA 2008. I understand that PR folks are there to tell you how great everything is, but if Robet Scoble’s producer can come away with the impression that it’s a useful little camera—we all walked the show floor a bit together, yay—, then I’m sure it’s good enough for most of us.

As you already know, the camcorder records video at 720×480, and is able to record in an optimized YouTube mode. Basically, it records at a native YouTube resolution and FPS, so nothing is “lost” when you upload the video. That’s useful for, well, people like us, grabbing quick video clips of odds and ends and then uploading them from the floor of an airport or something.
She uses H.264 compression, and everything is wrapped up in an AVI container. Samsung only wants $280 for this, which is more than reasonable, I think.

The new platform is the first to apply H.264 CODEC to SD camcorders. Supporting multi-CODEC from MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 to H.264, the platform improves recording times and video quality by more than doubling the high compression ratio.
Focusing on high video quality, Samsung’s new platform features advanced face detection technology that automatically detects faces and optimizes the diaphragm and focus of the camcorders.

In addition to face detection technology, the platform is packed with powerful technologies such as 3-D noise reduction algorithm for smooth video, Samsung’s own edge filter for stunning video details and clarity, and the color control technology for the original and natural colors.


Samsung’s new platform enhances the compatibility for camcorder users with ease. The platform allows consumers to easily get their memories from camcorders to multi-media devices such as MP3 players and PMPs supporting H.264 format - without having to transcode the files.

This one doesn’t have internal flash storage like it’s older HD brother, the HMX10, but accepts SD/SDHC up to 32GB and MMC+ memory cards. The little guy can shoot up to three hours, shoots at SD and kicks ass with H.264 video compression. Look for it next month in four colors, including red, blue, silver and black for $279.99.

We won't fault you for forgetting all about Samsung's SC-MX20 -- after all, it was crammed deep beneath a host of other Sammy camcorders when announced at CES earlier this year. Nevertheless, we've received a few more vital details about said shooter today, and aside from boasting a 680K pixel CCD sensor (720 x 480 resolution), this one also features a 34x optical zoom, Advanced Image Stabilization, face detection, an SD / SDHC card slot, a battery good for three hours, a 2.7-inch LCD monitor (on a swivel, no less) and ten automatic scene modes for extra good times. Additionally, the unit packs a special shooting mode that captures in a resolution and format perfect for YouTube, so those terrified of converting will surely be breathing a sigh of relief. Expect this one to land next month in red, white, black and blue for a very manageable $279.99.
