Review: SAMSUNG, YP-S2 by YEPP

New, Fresh, Awesome
While the majority of MP3 players making progress endlessly is a juke box type with a large memory, the new concept MP3 player was released by Samsung. It’s not a juke box with a large memory, but this design like an accessory is a good cloth of small capacity MP3 players, as we saw that the small capacity MP3 player with a Disney character was very successful. At this point, most of you have an MP3 player. If you want to buy one more, I’m wondering that you want to have an accessory type player or a hard disk type which has a lot of functions with a large screen.
　

The simpler, the more popular?
It’s a while ago, but according to a report I read, Koreans tend to be more sensitive to a trend, and the cycle is very short, so they want to listen to new songs rather than have many songs. I don’t exactly remember if it was about Asians or Koreans. The conclusion was that Koreans prefer flash type and light MP3 players to juke box type. Of course, there are people liking filling their players with favorite songs, but I think the people who prefer new songs are more. Besides, they have a tendency to like smaller instruments, so flash type MP3 player are more popular than the hard disk type.

　

Simple package
It consists of a main body, earphone with a neck strap, and a small adaptor 3.5 pi to USB. The regular selling model will have an install CD, but mine didn’t have it. As if a transparent crystal case package is a trend, I could see what the S2 is before opening the package.

　

The unique design reminding a pebble
I felt uniqueness which hasn’t seen in Korean products before. As some people might have seen an image or promotion, they are designed to remind a pebble with an emerald color, and even some product had a cute pattern.

Meeting a thing nobody has tried before is interesting. To be honest, this pebble concept had tried in a foreign country, and they were designed differently one by one like pebbles are different. The cheap price also was a good merit.

‘Is it the same as a pebble?’
When I looked at the YP-S2, it really seemed pebble. It feels like a pebble, but the color is more beautiful like jewelry women like, and it’s better in real. With the expectation ‘Is it the same as a pebble?’ when I held it, it was very light compared to a pebble. Because it is designed to hang on a neck, it must be light. If it had been as heavy as a pebble, there would have been so many claims about it, other than complimentary about realization.

　



The YP-S2 is an accessory type product like the iPod shuffle by Apple, or the Mplayer by iRiver. It took out LCD, and all status is confirmed by the LED indicator. At the front, there’s a cross-circular button for all control, while there’s nothing at the sleek back for minimalism. I meant it’s tanned.
　

Because an earphone connector at the top is decorated with something, so it feels like united with the body when connecting to the own neck strap. There’s a connection ring, and the body is so light, that you don’t have to worry about that the MP3 falls out, when carrying.








It’s more comfortable to hold it with hands than I expected. You can wrap it with your thumb, index, and middle finger, and once you learned how to adjust it (Actually, you don’t need this), it’s very easy to control it because the control part is designed with a dent to locate your thumb easily. The feeling of click is so clear that it’s very satisfactory.

　


One earphone terminal for transfer and charge at the same time
I couldn’t see any extra USB terminal. Yes! The S2 has only one 3.5 pi terminal for earphone to listen to music and data transfer and charge. The adapter is so small that it’s good for carrying. Once you have this adapter, you can make a copy and charge with a PC.


It takes about 2 hours to charge it fully. When charging, the LED blinking with red light, and when it’s done, it turns green on. The general playing time is 13 hours long, and if the battery is not enough, the LED shows red and the current color with blinking.


When connecting to PC with the USB terminal, it is recognized as a movable disk, so moving, deleting, and copying files are possible. For those of you wondering the speed of copy, I tried it with 893MB data (186 files, 18 folders). It took 7 min 10 sec. It’s fast as much as USB 2.0, but it’s similar to a general memory stick. Considering the 1 GB capacity, it’s not inconvenient.

　



Soft LED instead of LCD
The S2 supports MP3, OGG, and WMA. If you play other format files, it is rejected with the sounds ‘beep’. When the file is okay, the LED blinks with blue every 3 seconds.


MP3 players which doesn’t have display have disadvantage that users don’t know the information of songs, and can’t easily play a specific song. (Of course, I think most of the users already knew that..) Shuffle type players play only with shuffle mode, but the S2 has 3 playing mode. You can change it by pushing the smart button when playing. There are normal mode(Blue), shuffle mode(Green-Blue-Purple orderly), and playing list mode(Purple).


　
Small but with DNSe
Files are played by the name order and special letters, capital/small alphabet, and Korean order. If you want to turn off the LED, you can do it by pushing the smart button longer on pause. There’s another smart button at the right bottom side of the front control button. This smart button applies the Samsung’s DNSe by pushing it shortly. It only supports 3 modes, and change to Normal, Studio, and Concert hall order.


Due to the cheap price, I thought the sound quality is poor, but I was wrong. The volume range is quite good(volume 1~30), and with built-in EQ I could feel the DNSe enough. Because the bundle earphone is a neck strap type, you have to be cautious of loss.
　
　


Useful playing list in the S2
The playing mode couldn’t be made on the normal mode, but on shuffle mode when you want a song to add a list, pushing ‘+’ button longer, the song is added with ‘beep’ sound, and it’s possible up to 30 songs. If you want to take a song out, just push ‘-’ button longer.


If you didn’t make a playing list, you can choose only 2 modes except the playing list mode. There’s a reset button just in case at the right side.

　



Enjoy the S2 without a burden
Heavy hard disk type players are not good for exercise. Flash type is the best choice to listen to music while exercise. And this model is not only flash type, but also designed very well. So, isn’t it great to give files recording them with lovely messages?
Like a wedding ring, I imaging a couple wearing the same MP3 players on a neck. I’m finishing my review with an idea that because it looks great, the memory will be wonderful.

Review: Samsung YP-S2, 10 Years Became a Pebble.

10 years became a pebble.

It has been ten years, since MP3 players were born. I felt a wonder when I looked at a thing as big as a cassette player, and I feel like it was yesterday. But, now there are so many players such as 3 inch touch screen, or really small one.

Today I’m going to introduce the YP-S2 by Samsung, and it is so small that I can hide it with my palm.

　

This having a circular shape is made from a shiny pebble and it has black, white, red, green, and purple 5 colors.

Like big rocks at a mountain became a small cute pebble at a river by the flow of water, the big one became the cute S2 with 10 years.
　

Close your eye, and fall into it

Nowadays, MP3 players are jack of all trades. All video, image, and e-book are possible. The LCD just for convenience before is now essential, because the convergence of functions raised its head. However, the more these convenient factors increased, the farther from the real purpose enjoying music, I think.

With looking at the screen, and touching here and there, our eyes are distributed. And the more eyes are distributed, the harder we concentrate on music. All senses of humans are connected, aren’t they?

The S2 makes people focus on music itself by taking out the LCD.
　

Twinkle and Combo

Is a display necessary for MP3 players? There’s no answer. No, both are right.
Of course, there’s an inconvenience by the absence of a display. But, the S2 without a display is convenient to use. Isn’t it weird?

The S2 solved the problem of an inconvenience by a novel idea. Depending on the status, the color of the LED changes and by the time of pressing the buttons it works differently.
The LED changing by the playing mode makes people easily know what mode it uses.

Blue light is on in a normal mode, while in a random mode the light changes to green-blue-purple. And in a playing list mode, purple light is blinking. If users choose a wrong file, the current color of light are blinking by 1.5 sec with ‘beep’ sound.

With this small LED, we know the status of the S2 easily.
　

Then, what is the combo?

The S2 has the 4-way buttons, play button, and smart button of 6 buttons. The 4-way buttons take charge of volume and searching, and the play button is in charge of play, purse and power. And the last smart button is for setting EQ and play mode.

Let me give you an example of the smart button. Pushing it shortly set EQ to Normal-Studio-Concert hall, and pressing it long changes the playing mode Normal-Random-Playing list mode. When it’s on pause, pressing it long turns LED on or off. This buttons does 3 things.
　

My own recipe

The S2 has a function to make a playing list. But, how is it possible without seeing anything?

The way to make a list is a piece of cake. While listening to music, if you like a song, all you need to do is to press “+” button to add, and to delete it, just press “-” button.

Max. 30 songs are saved to this list.
　

Really? DNSe 3D is possible?

Don’t disregard this product just because of the small size. It’s cute and small, but it has the DNSe Samsung’s pride.

The sound effect is somewhat limited, because it only has Normal, Studio, and Concert hall. It changes by the smart button.

The normal mode makes balanced sound, but a little weak. The studio mode sounds like feeling space, and the concert hall mode is suitable for live albums.
And the S2 supports MP3, WMA, and OGG.
　

Necklace type earphone

The S2 provide a necklace type earphone, and it used EP370 series unit regarded as a good one for the price. With a small ring, the earphone is connected to the body of the S2, and it seemed insecure. But unlike the way it looked, it is fixed firmly, so you don’t have to worry.

The sound quality with the bundle earphone is a little stressed to middle and high note rather than lower note, and the hitting feeling is quite good. The overall sound satisfactory is satisfactory, but the lower note is light, not hard and the lower-middle tone tends to be combined. However, thanks to abundant sound and high resolution, the sound is harmonious with the DNSe.

People say fashion comes periodically. The fashion trend rebirthing with new materials and colors to find a contact between the generation accustomed to a trend icon and those who are not is coming with more various media and better transmission to us than in the past. What does the Samsung Yepp YP-S2 look like in 2008?

With breaking into the video game console market, Samsung gave a joyful dream to people who want to have it in 1987. After 21 years, the YP-S2 having 5 colors became an MP3 player to enjoy music.

The YP-S2 is beautiful like a handmade necklace. Because it has many colors, whatever you choose, it serves both as an MP3 player and a fashion accessory. That is one of the best advantages of the YP-S2.

Users have been in trouble to keep general MP3 players due to a long earphone. However, they adapt a necklace type earphone EP370N for convenient and effiecient use. Through simple handling users can control the location of buttons, and it is finished for convenience in neck. To avoid the earphone falling out from the player, there’s a safety ring to protect it.

The LED changes its color to blue, green, and pink depending on the condition. In the normal mode it’s blue, while in the favorite mode, it’s pink. In the shuffle mode, those 3 colors are changing in order, so when seeing it at night, it looks like a firebug. If I have to say something more, putting more small LEDs in the edge, and then making themt glow following the output wave such as an equalizer are better, I think.

The YP-S2 by Samsung not only means as the first product in 2008, but also MP3 players has been evolved as a fashionable item. Especially, it supports the format WMA and OGG with MP3, and mode confirmation function with the 3 colors LED. I think those functions are enough to get an attention.In the cool summer night, when somebody sees you with the YP-S2, they might think you are the person having a shiny littlestar in your heart.

Once the portability and sound quality are satisfactory, they will be competitive.) The YP-S2, the new competitor of the low cost market led by iRiver S series, Mplayer, U5 by Cowen, YP-S3 by Samsung and so on. Not only has very impressive design, but also supports the DNSe, and the high quality sound is expected.
　
The peculiar design looking like a pebble in the beach, and the soft LED in the lower part are very charming to not only men, but also women. As the necklace type earphone is provided as a bundle, portability is very good, and it’s also great as an accessory.

The size is 41.2 x 42.4 x 16.7 mm, and the weight is 17.5g, so I can say the portability is the best.(It’s small and light as much as the iRiver S series and 2nd iPod Shuffle by the Apple) I hung on my neck with the earphone, and I hardly felt the weight.

Unlike other design unsatisfactory, the design of the S2 is so modern that makes me satisfied.(I expect much on design as well as the functions of new products. When it comes to Samsung MP3 players, they were very good in functions, but the design were almost the same such as the bar type, and touch pad, so I didn’t expect much. I hope the S2 becomes a turning point of unique design.)
　
　
The biggest advantage of this product is the design. I think it has the most modern and beautiful design of all MP3 players, so it’s enough to use an accessory harmonious with formal and casual dress.(I expect that it will be very popular in 10’s or 10’s women. Sound quality, portability and the design are very satisfactory, so it has everything to become popular in women.)
That it’s easy to control by my thumbs unlike my thought that it’s difficult to push buttons due to the small size is quite satisfied. It’s perfectly linked to SMS, so easy to control without difficulty.
　
It was very good product without defects. It will be a fresh impact to users sick of big and heavy MP3 players, I think. Design, portability, and sound are all satisfactory.
