Samsung intros SL102 / SL420 point-and-shoots, no one notices

Samsung has already thrown most of its excitement out here at CES, and after looking at the SL102 and SL420, you might argue that "most" should actually be "all." Nah, there's nothing intrinsically awful about either of these 10.2 megapixel shooters, but they're certainly amongst the most ho hum delivered at the show. Both of the SL-Series devices also offer up Face Detection, rechargeable Li-ion batteries and Digital Image Stabilization technology. As for differences, the SL102 packs a 3x optical zoom and a 2.5-inch LCD, while the SL402 includes a 2.7-inch LCD monitor and a 5x optical zoom. Like we said, pretty boring, but we don't doubt their ability to get the job done if it really came down to it.

Samsung's basic ultracompact for the shaky

If you'll be shopping for a simple, small digital camera when spring 2009 rolls around, you may be interested in this 10-megapixel model from Samsung.
The SL420 has a 5x optical zoom and dual image stabilization--optical and digital--and a 2.7-inch LCD on back. It's otherwise unremarkable.
However, you will find now-standard features like face, blink, and smile detection and an ISO range up to 1600 at full resolution and up to ISO 3200 at 3 megapixels.
If that's too much camera for you, look into the SL102, which pares everything back to just a 3x zoom, digital image stabilization, a 2.5-inch LCD, and only face detection.

Samsung SL420 Digital Camera First Impression Review

At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week we had the chance to try out a very pre-production version of a newly announced compact camera, the SL420 from Samsung.

There's no announced price yet, and the confirmed shipping information so far is "first half of 2009." Still, as we worked our way through the features of what on the surface seems like a fairly ordinary-looking camera, we uncovered several surprising and useful features, including a 5x zoom lens, a wide range of color modes to employ while shooting, extensive picture control options available during video recording, and the option to record voice annotations while shooting, or add them afterward. Samsung SL420 digital camera : At the 2009 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada, Samsung Electronics America introduces its new digital camera lineup for the first half of 2009. Consisting of four new models, Samsung’s new digital cameras run the gamut in terms of style and innovation and are designed for shooters of various skill levels and budgets. One of the newly introduced digital cameras is the Samsung SL420, of the popular and user-friendly SL-Series. The new SL420 digital camera features a resolution of 10.2 megapixels, offers Face Detection and is offered by rechargeable Li-Ion batteries.

Samsung SL420 camera features The Samsung SL420 addresses consumers’ demands for larger LCD screens, longer zooms, and better stabilization. The Samsung SL420 features a larger 2.7 inch LCD display, a powerful 5x optical zoom that allows the shooter to get in close to their subject from far away, and Dual Image Stabilization, which combines the strengths of both Optical and Digital Image Stabilization to help reduce blur caused by an unsteady hand. Furthermore, the Samsung SL420 can record MPEG4 / SVGA video. The Samsung SL420 will be available in Spring 2009. Samsung goes official on the WB1000/TL320 digicam

Remember that Samsung digital camera from a few months back with the analog battery and memory card gauges? Well, we finally have all the specs and it’s shipping out next week.

The WB1000 features a 12.2 megapixel sensor, paired with a 24-mm wide angle Schneider-KREUZNACH 5x zoom lens. Samsung also stuffed in a dual optical and digital image stabilizer to help with shaky hands. Plus, the camera can record H.264 720p videos via the 1/2.33-inch CCD sensor.

The backside impresses too with a 480×260 OLED display that will make viewing so much easier in bright areas. Don’t forget about those analog gauges on the top side that displays the remaining battery life and SD storage capacity level. They might have a certain novelty effect, but they are there too.

Crutchfield is listing the camera under the TL320 model name with a ship date of June 18th. The retailer also has a $380 price listed which isn’t all that bad if the camera lives up to it’s specs.

Review: Samsung SL420 Camera

I recently received a camera to enjoy for a month (not to keep! lol) so that I can write a review of it. The Samsung SL420 camera is a 10.2 MP camera that helps you “Never Miss Another Smiling Face”. It retails for $179.99 and you can find the Samsung SL420 10MP on Amazon as well. Here’s what I thought about this camera:

Rechargeable Battery
Different photo options

Cons:

No SD card included
I definitely thought this camera was very user friendly. It explained every choice you made to you right on the screen. The fact that it had a rechargeable battery was great. With a young child batteries are always needed and never on hand at my house! Those AAA and AA batteries are used for remote control cars and other toys he likes to play with. Every time I want to pick up my dinosaur camera I never have batteries! It also has great photo options for those of us who may not have the best skin. It actually has a beauty feature that hides imperfections. Perfect for those prom photos as well!

As far as the cons are concerned I am surprised it didn’t come with an SD card. It’s been a while since I’ve been camera shopping so maybe this is the norm now a days. It’s also pretty cheap to purchase an SD card I got one at K-Mart for less than $10 for a 2G. You would definitely need one because this camera can’t hold many pictures without it. What I love about that SD card is that you can take it off your camera and load it to your desktop, laptop or store kiosk to upload and purchase your photos.

My favorite feature was the smart auto feature where the camera chooses the best settings based on the surroundings and lighting. This is definitely a camera for the average user especially that new Mami that wants to take pictures daily of her new baby. Trust me the first couple of months I took pictures of my son with my picture phone and my camera daily! Then they start moving and don’t stay still. The pictures tend to be a bit harder to grab and this camera can make it a whole lot easier to catch a great picture!

The Samsung SL420 10MP comes in black, gray and hot pink and is think enough to throw in your purse or diaper bag without taking up too much space. All in all a good camera I definitely recommend it!

Samsung Cams Go Ultrawide, Ultraslim

During four digital camera announcements at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas today, Samsung introduced a wide-angle, 10X-optical-zoom camera that ranges from an extremely wide 24mm on the wide-angle end to 240mm on the telephoto end. In wide-angle capability, the Samsung HZ10W is the league leader at this year's CES among fixed-lens cameras.

The 10.2-megapixel HZ10W, which will be available in January for $300, also features a 720p high-definition shooting mode (30 frames per second with the H.264 codec) that saves video clips as one file, even after the shooter pauses the recording. Also in the mix are dual optical/digital image stabilization and today's usual host of face-detection, smile-trigger, and red-eye-correction modes.

In addition to the HZ10W, Samsung announced the ultracompact, 12.2-megapixel TL100, which is just 16.6 millimeters thick.

The TL100 offers a new addition to Samsung's in-camera features: a Smart Auto mode, which automatically selects a scene mode or camera settings based on the shooting environment. The TL100, which also has a 3X optical zoom, MPEG-4 video capability, digital image stabilization, and a 2.7-inch-diagonal LCD, will be available in the spring, but pricing information has not yet been released.

Rounding out Samsung's CES 2009 camera announcements are two new entry-level models, the SL102 and SL420. The lower-end, 10.2-megapixel SL102 (pictured below) provides a 3X optical zoom, a 2.5-inch-diagonal LCD, motion-JPEG video shooting, face recognition, and digital image stabilization.

The slightly higher-end SL420 (pictured below) packs in much of the same features, but has a 5X optical zoom, dual optical/digital image stabilization, MPEG-4 video capability, a 2.7-inch LCD, blink detection, and a smile-trigger shutter. Both models will be available in the spring, but pricing is not yet available.
