Samsung at Photokina in Cologn, Germany

For those who can read German, followings are for you to know Samsung in Photokina Fair in Cologne, Germany.

Konnektivität auf der Photokina live erlebbar

Attachments to this press release: with images with additional documents

Samsung Camera Announced in Photokina Fair in Cologne, Germany

New Customer-centered products aimed at attaining market leadership
Unveils new high zoom camera with wide angle zoom and HD movie capability

Samsung Camera announced today that it would seek to attain its market leadership by providing imaging solutions aimed at satisfying diversified consumer needs throughout the total digital imaging lifecycle from taking great photos to sharing images with their friends and families. This movement signals a bold step for the company away from the conventional way of business in the camera industry, which has primarily focused on technological advancement. Samsung is going to introduce innovations through combining existing solutions and technologies to answer to consumer needs and desires from 09 lineup. To showcase this new direction, Samsung is introducing sharing photos through Home Network, uploading and sharing photos through WiFi, and innovative UI at 2008 Photokina.

Meanwhile, recognizing consumers' needs to capture a picture overcoming a physical distance and to carry easily, Samsung is introducing the world first 10x zoom and Ultra Wide 24mm compact, the "HZ1", at Photokina this year. The HZ1 enables consumers to get sharper and wider images from a distance by simultaneously combining high technology, optical 10X Zoom and ultra wide 24mm. With the launch of the HZ1, Samsung Camera will enter the Compact High-Zoom market, strengthening its full lineup and showcasing its technological innovation.

Addressing the company's initiative, Park Sang-Jin, Executive Vice President of Samsung Camera, said "The key to success is to provide products and solutions that enhance the consumers experience for beyond photo taking. We are looking at consumer needs for communication with their family and friends through photos and moving images. We're trying to move beyond the competition which is primarily focused on features and functions to serve consumer needs better."
Looking forward, Park added that "Samsung is already strongly competitive with a variety of consumer electronics and related technologies such as semiconductors, TVs, camcorders, and cell phones. By leveraging our core technological capabilities and applying broad and deep understanding about global consumers and their needs, we expect to attain a top-tier camera brand position within a few years."

What is Photokina Fair?

photokina 2008 presents the future of worldwide image communication

1,523 suppliers from 49 countries at the World of Imaging

66 percent from abroad

Companies exhibiting at larger stands in Cologne

More than 200 new exhibitors

photokina strengthens its position as the leading international trade fair for the entire imaging sector

Fair to feature outstanding supporting program

About 160,000 visitors from around the world are expected

From September 23 to 28 at photokina 2008, the "who's who" of the international photo and imaging sector will once again present the entire spectrum of products and services in the areas of modern image technology and image application for consumers and professionals. With 1,523 companies from 49 countries exhibiting, the turnout for the sector's leading trade fair remains strong. "No other trade fair offers such a comprehensive range of products and services from the world of imaging and for the photographic and imaging sector. In the world of global digital communications, photokina can truly claim to be one of the leading events of its kind," said Koelnmesse Executive Vice President Oliver P. Kuhrt. The fair's organizers - Koelnmesse and the Photographic Industry Association - are expecting approximately 160,000 visitors from all over the world, who will learn about the latest products, services, and trends related to all aspects of imaging media. With 66 percent of the exhibitors coming from abroad and an increase in the number of countries represented (2006: 46 countries), there has once again been a moderate increase in the fair's international character. photokina thereby strengthens its position as the imaging industry's most important global business platform, Kuhrt said.

This year many of the exhibiting companies - including Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, and Canon - are also once again expanding their exhibition areas. photokina's organizers also are pleased to report their success in attracting new exhibitors. More than 200 companies have decided to exhibit at photokina for the first time. Kuhrt said he is particularly delighted this year that photokina's importance on the international stage has convinced the global player Microsoft to once again take part with a large stand at the fair, following the presence of the company from Redmond at the 2004 event. In addition, General Imaging, a new supplier in the camera segment, will for the first time present its products at photokina.

Optimized workflow concept
As Kuhrt reported, the fair's successful concept of aligning the entire imaging workflow with the event's hall structure will be further improved and optimized for photokina 2008. The previous five product areas have been reduced to only four this year, representing the entire imaging workflow: Image Capture, Image Processing, Image Storage, and Image Output. Moreover, accessories will now be presented in the imaging workflow product area they are used in, said Kuhrt. This optimization measure reflects the wishes of the market for effective implementation of the workflow concept in the form of a stronger consolidation of the individual product areas supplemented by accessory presentations. At the same time, the new setup results in a clearer and more compact hall structure.

The trends at the fair - for professionals and private users
Along with displays of new cameras, lenses, printers, services, and accessories for specialist users, professionals and consumers, the event's organizers expect photokina to be dominated by the questions of which simple and creative methods will be offered to consumers for printing images, and which new possibilities for displaying images will be used in the digital age. Particularly noteworthy here is the dynamically growing area of individually produced photo books.

In the consumer segment, the organizers report, this year's trends include new camera functions such as intelligent face-recognition, GPS functions, and the increasingly tightly meshed and improved networking of devices with electronic products and appliances in the home. Sector experts also expect entirely new solutions to be presented in the image processing segment, products that will greatly expand creative freedom in post-processing - all with even better image quality and increasingly intuitive operation. Multifunctionality and mobility are the defining trends for the coming generation of high-tech cameras. This also will mean a further increase in the pixel counts of the new camera models' resolutions. On exhibit will be cameras featuring more and tinier pixels on increasingly small sensors as well as products equipped with larger and larger pixels on sensors with image areas that correspond to those of traditional medium-format film images. photokina 2008 exhibitors also will present single-lens reflex cameras for HD video recordings as well as HD video cameras with high-resolution photography features.

Hot topics in the professional segment are new high-end digital camera backs with resolutions of up to 65 million pixels, as well as the trend toward high light-intensity lenses for professional users, which stand out by virtue of delivering very high quality images despite a rather small zoom area. When it comes to professional image output, trade visitors will find many new products - from single-pass inkjet printers and UV-LED printers to water-based latex inks and the possibility of printing in excellent quality on a nearly endlessly diverse spectrum of paper and materials, even including textiles, plastic film, and metal plates.

First class supporting program offers more value for trade visitors
The photokina organizers also presented some of the initial highlights of the supporting program for the 2008 event. Returning this year will be the traditional GfK Market Briefings, which provide retailers and industry representatives from around the world with concise, up-to-date basic and background information and detailed market studies. Further highlights include the "Memories on demand" International Business Forum, where top international decision makers in the sector will discuss the effect digital imaging technology is having on consumer lifestyles. Rather than focusing solely on technological innovations, the forum will primarily address the question as to which new business models are best suited to meeting modern consumer requirements. photokina's organizers expect international top managers from the industry and the retail sector to participate in the forum.

DGPh presentation forum "Digital storage - film-based archiving?"
In an event titled "Digital storage - film-based archiving?", the science and technology section of the German Society for Photography (DGPh) will be joining photokina organizers to stage a presentation forum at photokina 2008 that will showcase the opportunities and limitations of film-based and digital archiving.

XXL Photo Album
One of the most unusual attractions at photokina 2008 will certainly be the world's largest photo book, the XXL Photo Book. With its ten pages measuring three meters in length and two meters in height, it's not only the largest photo book in the world, it's also sure to be the highlight of the trade fair in Hall 10.2. The giant photo book will be surrounded by photo kiosks and photo printers. All visitors to photokina can contribute to the photo book by printing out their digital images at one of the print stations and gluing it into the blank XXL Photo Book.

XXL Impressions - large format image presentation and projection
The "XXL Impressions" Projection Arena, which will be located in an impressive special area, will focus on image presentation and projection. It will demonstrate to trade visitors and end consumers how to underline the emotional impact of good images by presenting them in an impressive manner. The aim of this event is to show photographers that there's a presentation and projection solution for every requirement, no matter how large or small the budget. Professional users, such as photographers, advertising agencies, travel agents, museums, architects, and companies, will also receive practical instructions on how to choose customized solutions that meet their particular needs.

Dennis Hopper's photos in the Visual Gallery
The Visual Gallery will once again serve as a cultural highlight at photokina 2008 by presenting the best works of internationally renowned photographers and award-winning young talents. The "top act" at this year's Visual Gallery will be photographs by the U.S. actor and director Dennis Hopper. The exhibition includes portraits of David Hockney, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, and Andy Warhol. In addition, the internationally renowned top photographer and photojournalist Thomas Höpker, who now lives in New York, will be presenting works that are high points of his career in photography. In the 1950s, he had just turned twenty when two of his early works received awards in the photokina competition "Jugend photographiert". Further highlights at the Visual Gallery will include exhibitions from the "Cicero Gallery for Political Photography," MAPHO (Museum for Architectural Photography), the C/O Berlin Cultural Forum, and the German Association of Freelance Photo Designers (BFF).

Fascinating photos all over Cologne: "photokina: cologne takes photos!"
With a brand-new photo event, the organizers of photokina want to spread a passion for photography beyond the trade fair grounds to encompass the entire city of Cologne. The new event format "photokina: cologne takes photos!" will accompany this year's photokina, with visitors to the city being asked to take their own photographs from September 6 to 28, 2008. In cooperation with Cologne-based companies and institutions, an extensive program will be on offer in the city center, including workshops, photo shoots, photography city tours, competitions, and exhibitions. Thanks to unusual locations and exciting events, participants are certain to have enormous fun while learning more about the medium of photography. "photokina: köln fotografiert!" ("cologne takes photos") will take place under the auspices of the mayor of Cologne, Fritz Schramma, and is co-sponsored by the city, the 19th International Photoscene Cologne, and various public and private institutions throughout the city. With this, Cologne aims to establish a top-notch image-based festival every two years in order to complement the photokina trade fair and to prove the city's importance as a major center for photography.

CNET Review for Samsung SC-HMX20

Here is another video review from CNET.COM for the Samsung Sc-HMX20C full HD camcorder.

CNET Review: Samsung YP-S3

The CNET magazine reviewed Samsung YP-S3 MP3 player. The rating is marked as very good.

CNET.COM has approximately 26millimon users.

Here is the review information.

The good: The Samsung S3 Slim MP3 player offers a sleek and stylish design and a handful of desirable features, such as OGG support, a folder navigation option, and a nine-band user EQ. It's also a good value and offers great sound quality.

The bad: Compared with other Samsung players, the S3 is anemic in the features department, and the touch-sensitive controls are not for everyone.

The bottom line: The Samsung S3 Slim MP3 player is a solid option for budget-minded users with an eye for design and an ear for audio.

The MP3 player market does nothing but benefit from the decline in flash memory prices. One of many examples can be found in the Samsung S3 Slim, a super slick-looking device that comes in 4GB and 8GB versions for just $79.99 and $119.99, respectively. The S3 delivers a good value, thanks to excellent sound quality and a handful of useful features. However, we're a bit letdown by the player's shrunken screen and lack of integrated Bluetooth, a neat feature that is included on its sibling, the Samsung T10.

The Samsung S3 Slim is fairly similar in design to its predecessor, the Samsung T10, although the S3 has a sturdier feel and more rounded edges. The clear-coated metallic body gives the player a smooth feel and stylish look, and at least some of the colors aren't completely smudge-prone--a rarity in shiny devices. The S3 is available in a choice of five colors: black, blue, green, red, and white. Glowing touch-sensitive controls live beneath the shiny exterior and light up only when activated by your finger. On the one hand, this gives the player a sleek and stylish look; on the other, it adds an extra step to navigation. The singular tactile control, a combo power/hold switch, resides on the right spine. The bottom of the S3 houses a proprietary syncing port and a standard 3.5mm headphone jack. Unfortunately, you won't find a dedicated volume rocker anywhere on the device.

As its name suggests, the Samsung S3 Slim is slender and compact, measuring 3.7 inches by 1.7 inches by 0.3 inch, which is just fractionally larger than the 4G iPod Nano. Sadly, the S3's screen is 0.2 inch smaller than that of both the T10 and the Nano at 1.8 inches diagonally. This seemingly minor decrease is definitely noticeable when it comes to portable devices.

Despite the decrease in screen size, the onscreen interface remains one of Samsung's strong points. On the S3, content is neatly ordered into separate music, photo, and video menus; alternatively, there's a folder selection for those who prefer to navigate files based on desktop organization. Once you dig into the music menu, you can find tracks by artist, album, playlist, and so on. The standout, however, is the graphic interface. Samsung offers a choice of three menu themes, one of which lets you set any photo as wallpaper. The playback screen may be set to display album art, song info, or one of three animated visualizations. We suspect the latter may affect battery life, but it's a nice option for those who like eye-candy.

On the features side, we were disappointed to find that some of our favorite extras from the T10 were not carried over to the S3. There's no built-in Bluetooth and no Rhapsody DNA integration, so while the player does support subscription WMAs, it will not accept Rhapsody Channels. In addition to WMA, the S3 supports MP3 and Ogg Vorbis audio, JPEG photos, simple text files, and SVI/MPEG-4 video. All video must be transcoded using the included Media Studio software--always a bummer in our book. On a positive note, the S3 does include an FM tuner and recorder, as well as an alarm function, a handful of games, and the ability to adjust playback speeds for audio files (a useful feature for audio books and podcasts). There's also plethora of DSNe sound effects, including Samsung's signature nine-band user-definable EQ.

During our sound testing, we toyed with many of the sound settings, but ultimately kept the S3 on flat to hear it in its purest form. The different effects and EQs dramatically affect the audio output, so pretty much any listener should find a suitable sound profile. One thing is a given: you must replace the packaged headphones if you really want to hear what the S3 has to offer in the audio department. The stock 'buds sound OK, but they don't do the player justice. We used the Shure SE310 canalphones and Creative's Aurvana Live cans and were pleasantly surprised at how well the S3 powered the full-size 'phones. This player--with all bass boost settings off--offers an impressive amount of bass. It's deep, heavy, and tight, without taking away from the crispness on the high-end. In general, music sounds rich, warm, and encompassing, and all genres are pretty even. Two minor issues we noticed: a very slight background hiss in certain tracks and a tendency for some songs to sound harsh. However, we found that the latter could be remedied by adjusting the EQ.

Video and photo performance was more than adequate in our testing, though the small screen makes it a bit difficult to enjoy either--we definitely found ourselves missing that 0.2 inch. Still, images are bright and clear with good color saturation, and viewing angles are decent. Rated battery life of 25 hours for audio and 4 hours for video is plenty adequate.

Video Clip for Samsung YP-Q1 MP3 Player at IFA 2008

Samsung's YP-Q1 MP3 player has been introduced at IFA 2008. This video clip was recorded at the Samsung's MP3 booth in the IFA 2008 show in Berlin, Germany.

Samsung YP-Q1 PMP: Hands On at IFA 2008

The IFA 2008 in Berlin, Germany has been successfully completed.
One of the participants steped by Samsung booth and commented Samsung's new YP-Q1 MP3 player comming soon.

Samsung
took the wraps off their new YP-Q1 PMP at IFA 2008, and we stopped by to have a play. With a 2.4-inch QVGA LCD, a choice of 4, 8 and 16GB capacities and touch-sensitive controls, the Q1 really should be a home run for Samsung; unfortunately, from our brief hands-on at least, we’d wager it’s not.

The screen pales in comparison with rivals and the body, while solidly built, feels larger than it should. Menus and the GUI in general could do with taking a lesson from Samsung’s cellphone team; the Q1 is uninspiring.
The frustrations don’t end there. Apple might get away with using a proprietary connector since they hold the greatest market share, but everyone else is slowly migrating to some form of USB and Samsung should really do the same. Meanwhile the capacitive touch-sensitive controls basically just replace hard buttons, rather than offering scrolling gestures; that makes the Q1 actually harder to use in a pocket.
We didn’t have enough of an opportunity to test the DNSe 3.0 audio processing Samsung have added, which the company claims can “upscale” lower bitrate tracks to sound higher quality. If they can pull it off, it might be the Q1’s saving grace.

Expect the Samsung YP-Q1 to launch in October, available in white, black or silver.

Reviewed by Crunch Gear: Here’s that Samsung YouTube camcorder

In addition to having TVs as far as they eye can see, Samsung has that YouTube camcorder, the SC-MX20, on display at IFA 2008. I understand that PR folks are there to tell you how great everything is, but if Robet Scoble’s producer can come away with the impression that it’s a useful little camera—we all walked the show floor a bit together, yay—, then I’m sure it’s good enough for most of us.

As you already know, the camcorder records video at 720×480, and is able to record in an optimized YouTube mode. Basically, it records at a native YouTube resolution and FPS, so nothing is “lost” when you upload the video. That’s useful for, well, people like us, grabbing quick video clips of odds and ends and then uploading them from the floor of an airport or something.
She uses H.264 compression, and everything is wrapped up in an AVI container. Samsung only wants $280 for this, which is more than reasonable, I think.

Samsung Introduces “Seamless Experience” at IFA 2008

Shares Ambitious Plans to Bridge “Digital Divide,”
To help Consumers Enjoy Digital Benefits Anytime, Anywhere

Berlin, Germany, August 29, 2008 __ Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a global leader in digital media and digital convergence technologies, today unveiled ambitious plans to take the lead in developing products and technologies that help consumers from all walks of life be part of today’s digital benefits.

In an opening keynote address titled “Seamless Experience,” President Jongwoo Park highlighted Samsung’s leadership in consumer electronics industry and shared Samsung’s determination to develop products that not only surpass existing standards, but also help consumers who feel left behind catch up with the rapid pace of technological advances.

“’Seamless Experience’ is the new buzzword in our industry and we have not just embraced it, we’re leading it,” said Dr. Park, who heads the Digital Media Business at Samsung Electronics. “Consumers today have access to some the most advanced devices but many of them do not work well together and we’re on a mission to change that so consumers can fully enjoy the technological power of the devices anytime and anywhere.”

With “Seamless Experience” as its goal, Samsung also announced its 4C leadership initiative that will propel the company’s product development and marketing under four main concepts: Content & Service, Connectivity, Creativity, and Component.

Samsung’s 4C Leadership

Content & Service
New product offerings from Samsung Electronics go beyond pure technological advancement, as the company places new emphasis on value-added contents and services, such as the unique InfoLive function in the 7, 8 and 9 series TVs. InfoLive allows viewers access to streaming news, weather and stock info directly through the internet. The TVs are also shipped with a variety of professionally created content, such as an art gallery, cooking and yoga programs, and games for the kids.

The TVs also feature an updated and simplified user interface, which lets users connect quickly and easily to a powerful array of advanced features such as WISELINK Pro.
WISELINK Pro utilizes a fast USB 2.0 connection so users can connect their PC, camera, camcorder, or MP3 and then browse and view content directly on the TV screen. Also, the TV’s Smart Content Manager lets the user access and manage video, photo, music files using newly designed wheel key remote control.

Connectivity
Anynet + HDMI-CEC has been installed so that a single remote can control multiple AV devices, such as a home theater, Blu-ray player, camcorder, digital camera, and of course the TV itself. Many AV products shown at IFA, such as the HMX20 camcorder, NV100HD digital camera, and BD-P2500 5th Generation Blu-ray player, work in perfect harmony with Samsung TVs in terms of both design and connectivity.

Also, Series 7, 8, and 9 TVs are DLNA ready, so that with special software installed on the home PC, users can enjoy simultaneous viewing of downloaded or streamed content on multiple TVs throughout the house.

And finally, the BD-P2500 Blu-ray player can update to the latest Blu-ray profile easily through Ethernet or USB whenever a firmware upgrade is available online.

Creativity
Samsung places a premium on design, and there are many creative designs on display at IFA. One of those is the stunningly thin Series 8 TVs (40, 46 , and 52 inch) which measures just 44.5mm, or roughly half of previous products, and marks a dramatic reduction of 55% of the original width for a more sophisticated and intelligent design.

And in alliance with Giorgio Armani, Samsung has also released in Korea the Giorgio Armani Samsung TV, which adds elegance and warmth through the unique black color and premium wood reproduction in the frame.

Also, for TVs in the 7, 8, and 9 Series, Samsung has completely restyled its remote control to work more closely with the newly redesigned user interface. The key feature is a wheel-key that allows users to easily job through content and programming. 8, 9 Series TVs are also shipped with a unique, pebble shaped remote that adds to the style of the interior décor.

Component
Several industry leading, cutting edge products have been released at IFA, including a 200Hz LCD TV (40, 46, 52 inch) with Samsung Electronics’ advanced LCD technology, a 52 inch ultra slim LCD TV with a thickness of just one inch, a 3,840*2,160 resolution 82-inch QFHD (Quadruple full-high definition) TV, and a 31-inch OLED TV based on Samsung SDI’s OLED panel.

A further highlight in the TV lineup was the new Series 9 LCD TVs (46 and 55-inch) which has Smart LED technology and Samsung’s Ultra Clear Panel to express perfect blacks and ultimate contrast ratios. The unit’s special local dimming feature also dramatically reduces electricity consumption.

The NV100HD compact camera produces the sharpest pictures in its class, with 14.7 million pixels.

And the SyncMaster 2233HZ and 2243HZ monitors boast ultra-fast Motion Picture Response Time with enhanced MPA II that has been optimized for games and video. The new times have been reduced from 30ms to just 10ms.
