Samsung NX series cams will take on Micro 4/3rds

Just one day before PMA 2009, Samsung announced their new concept series: the Samsung NX. According to the release, the new series, “offers the performance and image quality of a DSLR and the portability and convenience of a compact point-and-shoot.”

The NX series of Samsung cameras will utilize an APS-C sized sensor, only this time around it will be crammed into a point-and-shoot body. Without the camera lingo: APC-C sensors are used in professional DSLR cameras like Canon’s 1D Mark III. They’re heavily used in photojournalism, sports photography, wildlife, etc.

Samsung took the Micro 4/3rds approach of removing the mirror box and using an electronic viewfinder. The first model will be available during the second half of this year. Details on the camera are still scant.

Chris’s Opinion
APS-C sized sensors in a point-and-shoot type body: cool! Myself and other photographers have been waiting for such a thing for a while. This truly is the rangefinder that many of us have been waiting for. (For clarification, a rangefinder is a camera that can take pictures of DSLR quality but are much, much smaller. They were very popular back in the film era and seem to be gaining momentum again in the digital age. Epson, Leica, Panasonic and Olympus seem to be the only companies that have done such a thing so far.)

Rumors have been abound that Canon and Nikon will step into this market, but we haven’t heard any announcements about their competing models yet.

took a look at the pictures of this camera and I can confirm a couple of things: there will be video of some sort and the microphone seems to be right by the lens although it seems to take the mono audio approach that the Nikon D90 took. There seems to be a speaker of some sort on top of the camera.

There will also be some sort of burst shot approach to the camera, though I can’t tell how fast it will be. It is heavily aimed towards enthusiasts and mid-level professionals though, and that can be justified with the lack of different shooting modes. The more professional the camera, the less shooting modes there are. Most pros only use Program, Aperture, Shutter, and Manual anyway.

My biggest gripe with this though is that I’m confident that they will still use Schneider lenses. As a personal preference: Olympus, Panasonic, Sigma and Leica 4/3rds lenses are some of the nicest, fastest, and sharpest I’ve ever used.

As a long time Olympus user, I think that Olympus and the other Micro 4/3rds manufacturers should consider a camera like this a threat: especially since APS-C sensor cams will always take better pictures with less noise than the small 4/3rds sensor. I’m still exicted to see what Olympus does with their Micro 4/3rds camera, which has yet to be spec’d and announced. All that was given so far was the concept design.
