World's first 64GB SSD camcorder

CES 2009: Samsung show off new range of SSD HD camcorders

Samsung rolled out a new HD camcorder at CES and claims it’s “the world’s first to feature an internal 64GB SSD”.

The snappy-named HMX-H106 is the company's new flagship camcorder, heading the new H-Series, all of which capture 1080i video and feature a 2.2 megapixel CMOS imaging sensor, 10x optical zoom, Schneider Kreuznach Varioplan HD lens and Optical Image Stabilization.

As far as design goes, it's not as ground-breaking and won't exactly have tongues wagging. It does take a small form factor including HDMI connection and the ability to capture 4.7 megapixel photos. The range will consist of different size storage capacities from 16GB to 32GB, and 64GB – which will be good for three, six, and 12 hours of footage using the H.264 compression format.

There are significant benefits to using solid state drives, the most notable being the lack of moving parts meaning power consumption will be less, preserving your battery for longer.

As a result of having no moving parts, the chance of mechanical failure is also reduced, so there’s no need to panic should it slip out of your sun lotioned hands on holiday.

As well as being smaller than a hard drive, making the camera lighter and more compact than hard drive models, SSDs boot up faster and read/write data quicker, a necessity for recording in full HD.
You can get your hands on the H-Series when they become available in April.
