Here is a user review about Samsung WB500 digital camera.
Optical 10x high zoom Schneider lens
The most remarkable feature of the WB500 is the Schneider lens which has 24mm wide-240mm tele angle. It’s different from other compact digital cameras having 3-4 optical zoom and digital zoom. Considering the purpose of a compact digital camera as normal snap pictures, the FOV is enough to have everything. The pixel is also 1M pixel, so it can have the advantage of high pixel such as crop and large development.
Dual IS
The weakest point of a compact camera is that it’s hard to have enough shutter speed when the light is insufficient, and it makes hand blur pictures. However, the WB500 uses the Dual IS function, and makes up for the weakness. The Dual IS function is to protect images with the optical way and digital (Electronic) way from shake, so it helps get satisfactory pictures even when the light isn’t enough.
720p HD video function
The WB500 supports HD video recording function using the H.264 codec with 30fps and 1024×720p resolution. Besides, for the video recording, optical zoom and IS function are also available, so it makes the video recording function much better.
Various face recognition functions
The WB500 automatically recognizes the location of faces and sets focus and exposure, so faster and more convenient human picture can be taken. Besides, it’s not just simple recognition, but the face recognition with various options. When self shot, it automatically recognizes the location of the face. To make up for the weakness of self shot which is impossible to see the LCD, it makes beep sound through the speaker, and it becomes more frequent when the recognition rate gets higher. Therefore, it provides various face recognition functions such as the self guide which helps convenient and exact shot during self shot, and smile shot which detect the smile and shoot without pushing the shutter. Design/User Interface
Generally, the WB500 is a little thick due to ultra high zoom, and a rubber grip makes the grip better. Since there is a speaker, you can directly hear voice from voice memo and video. When it comes to a power button, it’s displayed with a blue light, so you can check the status of the camera. For the zoom lever, when it goes to left, it gets wider, while to right, it activates the tele zoom. For the mode dial, there are auto, program, manual, Dual IS, beauty shot, Night scene, scene and video mode. I wish there was an iris mode in the first place, but from the scene mode, various situations can be selectable. When it comes to internal flash located on the front, in the range of +-1EV, it has 5 levels with 0.5EV interval. Since it supports AF, in the low light situations, it helps shot. (Remote control sensor and self timer lamp) By the user setting, exposure compensation, ISO, and white balance are adjustable with the command dial. The environment and shot settings are separate into Fn and Menu, so easy control is possible. The most basic shutter speed and iris can be adjustable only by Fn+Left and right button + Command dial. It has to be through 2 levels. I think it’s better if the shutter speed and iris adjustment were the same direction. Through the picture style function key, various styles of photos can be taken. On the whole, the interface is made to have users feel the function of the WB500 with simplicity and separation.
Menu
The menu part is that I don’t like. The UI of Fn menu group and the menu group are different. Probably, according to detailed items, the UI has been designed differently. The menu group which has detailed items has tree type menu based on the main setting icon, and according to the icon, detailed items can be selected. But the Fn group which doesn’t have detailed items can be set on the left side of the icon.
Picture play back multi slide show
On the picture play back, using the zoom lever, multi picture play pack by date is possible, and through the multi slide show, you can see pictures on your own way. Besides, on preview, using the picture style, rotation and color change can be used to fix the pictures.
White balance
7 levels of white balances are provided including custom. Under normal situation, auto white balance is so nice enough to be used, so the white balance is good, I think. When it comes to complex light, according to the sort of light and distribution, fluorescent and light bulb should be used appropriately.
High ISO noise
I think the practical ISO of the WB500 is ISO 400, and on the web it’s ISO 800. The noise function is normal. But I wasn’t satisfied that the resolution is degraded on ISO 3200.
Photo style
Through the photo style function key, pictures can be taken with change. This is included image compensation photo styles and provides 8 levels of photo styles.
