Review: Samsung IT100 Digital Camera

Here is a user review about Samsung IT100 digital camera.

There’s nothing more pleasant than flower blossom and beautiful sunlight of this season. People have been out to enjoy cherry blossoms more than ever, and the parks look greener than ever. In this blessed season, Samsung Digital Imaging has introduced the smart digital camera IT100.

It has 12.2 mega pixel, 94.5 x 58.9 x 22.5mm size, and 155g weight. IT100 has advanced Smart Auto mode, 28mm wide angle, 5x optical zoom, and 720p HD movie recording function.

What are noticeable on the upper side of IT100 are two mikes between a speaker. Compared to mono mike in regular compact cameras, it has two mikes and recorded as stereo, which guarantees improved sound quality.

It supports maximum 8GB SDHC memory. There’s a battery holder, and next to that, there’s a USB and A/V terminal. This terminal is multi-functional; it transfers photos or video clips to PC through USB cable, and is used for charging by connecting power adapter. Also, if you connect it to a cradle with HDMI port which is sold separately, you can enjoy clear image of 1280 X 720 pixel size on LCD TV or LED TV. This terminal which used to locate on the left side, now is placed on the bottom of the body.

IT100’s 3.0 inch wide screen has 230,000 pixels and a variety of functions. In digital cameras, users look at LCD monitor many times for shooting, so there’s a big difference between 2 and 3 inch. It looks stylish thanks to glossy-coated backside. But when you have to turn against sunlight, it can be reflected. So if you don’t want that, you’d better attach low reflection film.

IT100 doesn’t have ‘M’, that is manual, mode. There’re ‘SCENE’ mode that optimizes the shooting under frequently exposed situation and ‘Beauty shot’ mode for self shots. And other than ‘Shooting guide’ mode for beginning users, there’s ‘SMART AUTO’ mode that detects 11 situations in the image processor and shoots the best image. Manual mode has been removed, but instead, program mode has become more accurate.

IT100 has 12.2 mega pixels, 28-140mm in 35mm equivalent, and F3.4-F5.8. Plus, there’re 5x optical zoom, maximum 25x digital zoom, Dual IS, that is OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) and Advanced DIS (Digital Image Stabilization), resulting in stable and clear images. Before, DIS used to get the low-noise image by combining two photos, one in short exposure and the other in long exposure. On the other hand, Advanced DIS in Samsung Digital Imaging captures one image in high speed and removes noise in two steps. So its processing time is short, and its saturation is as good as former DIS.

In addition, IT100 has ‘editing backlight’ in program mode. There’s ‘ACB(Auto Contrast Balance) function that automatically controls contrast in backlight or when there’s much difference between darkness of subject and background. ‘Noise effect’ is a special effect that makes image look old.

IT100 not only expresses various styles using fantastic effects but also offers ACB(Auto Contrast Balance), Noise effect, Red eye removal, Face retouch, and Custom RGB option. It provides various effects without extra program like Photoshop.

Now let’s look at the photos taken with IT100. For the reference, all the photos from now on is taken under ‘SMART AUTO,’ ‘PROGRAM,’ or BEAUTY shot mode, and other effects like Custom RGB or red eye removal are not applied.

Since it’s spring, I was wondering how well it would express flowers. So I had to take a shot in funny position in a palace, and once I got warned for disturbing the traffic. But the close-up shot ended up looking great, and cherry blossoms look so splendid.

This photo is taken under ‘Beauty shot mode.’ I lent the camera to ladies with a baby. They took a shot and told me that the photo looked great. But I deleted them because of right of likeness so post this photo instead. IT100 has recycle bin function. So as long as you don’t completely format the camera or delete all pictures, you can activate this option and restore pictures.

The pictures above are taken to see the difference between 28mm wide angle and regular angle. 28mm wide cut captures wider area and looks clear.

Both the photos are taken under SMART mode. Since there’s a variety of color in the palace structure, I wanted to see how well it responds. And it expresses the antique trees pretty well.

Using ‘P,’ or ‘PROGRAM’ mode, I took a shot of downtown store at night without using flash. When you take pictures at night with compact digital cameras, sometimes the results are very disappointing. But it was ok without flash. What would happen if it was darker?

The flower shot at night is taken under ‘SMART AUTO’ mode. The flowers were next to street light, and I purposely went there to take a picture. I took a close-up shot using zoom, and it looks pretty clear.

I wanted to test Advanced DIS function of IT100 which supports ISO 80-3200. So I took a shot at a dark bar under ‘PROGRAM’ mode without flash. It was quite dark, but the photo looks fantastic.

Samsung Digital Imaging’s IT100 is very smart. It responds to various situations quickly and accurately without complicated operation. In addition, it can take not only photos but also HD movies (720p), so you can enjoy it with your family or friends.
