Here is a user review about Samsung WB500 digital camera.
There are many digital cameras released with phrases such as premium, high end, and so on. However, while using them, many of them have some points which are insufficient. If it has strong optical zoom, it doesn’t have good wide angle, or on the other hand, if it has strong wide angle, other functions such as video is not that good.
That’s why I didn’t expect much, when I heard Samsung would release a new high end digital camera. However, seeing the specification and design, I thought this is the real one, and have expected it much. Let’s take a look at the Samsung WB500 having wide angle, optical zoom, and video function.
Great specification WB500
There are products which supports either 24mm wide angle or optical 10x zoom, so depending on what users want, those were the important element to select a product. But there was nothing supporting both of them.
I mean the Samsung VLUU WB500 is the world’s first digital camera which supporting both 24mm wide angle and optical 10x zoom. When I talked to people that this digital camera supports 10x optical zoom, they reminded DSRL and worried about the portability. However, as we see below, the size of the WB500 is just like other normal digital camera.
Only with the specification such as 10.2M pixel sensor, HD video recording, optical 10x zoom, 24mm ultra wide angle (on 35mm), and dual IS, this catches eyes from many digital camera users.
Better grip and compact design
Samsung VLUU products emphasized slimness, so the grip was a little insufficient. This part has been improved much in the WB500. It’s not as slim as former products, but it still remains a compact design. It became thicker, and as a result, it has better grip. But the size is enough to carry, so it’s still portable.
The WB500 is largely black with chrome points. While the former products such as NV100HD or NV9 were slim models, the WB500 has appearance of high grade and heavy feeling. Even though it has been thicker than previous models, now it provides more stable grip, so it’s more easy to take a picture.
The size of the WB500 is 105×61.4×36.5mm (Except protruding parts). It’s bit thicker than other slim digital cameras, but almost the same as other normal compact digital cameras. At the front, there’s a big Schneider lens and rubber material for better grip and at the right there’s a strap ring and port for charge and data transfer.
Convenient interface
On the top, there’s a speaker, power button, zoom lever and mode dial. If the power is on, the blue LED inside is turned on. The mode dial located on the right can be adjusted easily with one hand to change a mode. Because buttons are located well, users can fix the product with a left hand and control it with a right hand, so beginners are able to easily get used to it. Since there are not many differences from other Samsung products, users who have an experience of Samsung products can easily use the interface.
At the back of the WB500, there’s a 2.7 inch LCD (230K fixel), function button, command lever for iris and shutter speed adjustment, play button, and effect button. Especially, with the function button at the center, you can easily access the menu, because functions frequently used are gathered. With the menu button, display setting, closeup shot, flash, and timer function are gathered. On the high grade black body, it gave points with the chrome line, and provides good grip. Also, as frequently used function can be set easily, I’d like to give a high score not only on the specification, but also on the appearance.
24-240mm Schneider Lens
The best thing of the WB500 is 24mm wide angle and optical 10x zoom. With the world’s first 24mm ultra wide angle and optical 10x zoom, it can take both wide scene, and distant objects like close objects using the zoom lens. The lens speed is not bad as F3.3-5.8.
Even though there are not many products supporting 24mm wide angle, once experiencing the 24mm product once, they can’t use other products. 24mm wide angle is really great. Scenes which can’t be seen can be taken to the camera. Also, with the 10x optical zoom, you can look at the distant objects without quality drop. The WB500 can be used as a camera, but also telescope.
Various picture styles
The WB500 can take various styles of pictures. Except the basic setting, it supports 7 styles such as vivid, soft, forest, retro, cool, calm, and classic. They are supported from former Samsung digital cameras, and using it with color setting or something, you can make up unique photos.
