Samsung HMX-R10

iGizmo posted a review about Samsung R10 camcorder.

A great-looking camera that performs beautifully despite the low price.

Terrific looks / Keen price / Nicely made
Low-light performance / Few on-camera controls

Samsung isn't normally shy when it comes to product design, and the Samsung HMX-R10 is one of the most unusual looking we've ever come across. Flat on one side with a sumptuous brushed-aluminium finish, concave on the other, rounded at each end and with the lens cut into the nose at a rakish, 45-degree angle: by all rights it should be ugly, but in the flesh it looks incredible.

The design isn’t just good-looking, it's practical. Build quality is second to none, it’s beautifully made and very compact, and with the lens pointing upwards you don't have to tilt your wrist uncomfortably to shoot straight ahead. Initially it feels weird: after a while you realise it's a concept that works extremely well.

Hey, good looking

The HMX-R10 looks and feels expensive, so it's surprising to find it relatively cheap at £379. It's even more surprising that it's so well specified: a 5x zoom (8x including digital zoom) and electronic image stabilisation; full HD at 1080 and 25fps, or 720p at 50fps. It also grabs nine-megapixel stills. Plus, there are a couple of fun slow motion modes to play with as well and an integrated stereo microphone.

Crucially, video quality is excellent. Colour accuracy was generally spot-on, and those shooting inside or in low-light situations will appreciate the lack of RGB noise. The small lens means detail isn’t exactly razor-sharp, but it’s surprisingly good for the price.

A touching story

There are only a few things missing. Optical stabilisation takes a back seat to electronic stabilisation, although the system is effective even with the camcorder zoomed in. And, in the interest of clean design there are few buttons - just zoom, record and a dedicated stills shutter button - which means adjustments to shutter speed, aperture and so on are made via the HMX-R10's 2.7in touchscreen.

The Samsung HMX-R10 is a very likeable camcorder: it looks and feels fantastic, it slips easily in the pocket and takes good quality footage at high resolutions. It's not quite up there with the truly superb Sanyo Xacti VPC-HD2000, for example, but its comparatively low price means it's a fine alternative.

This review has been changed since it was published, to clarify that the R10 has a 5x optical zoom, 8x including digital zoom

Great camera overall. I liked the size. I like the picture quality overall, but it is a little bit grainier than expected for HD. The one flaw is the shaky-ness of this camera.
